The Unruly Deciduous Shrub...

Most landscape beds in Central Montana have a healthy mix of perennials, shrubs, & trees. As both the plants within a landscape bed and the homeowner age, things can get out of control. Older deciduous shrubs may appear to have more dead material within them than alive. In this case, I like to rejuvenate them by cutting the shrub back to about 6-12 inches from the ground. I also prune the dead material out at this time. Late Fall to early Spring is the ideal time to rejuvenate deciduous shrubs. This may seem a bit aggressive, but the new growth is fuller and more uniform.
