Keeping ahead of an established weed seed bank
We've all gotten behind at one point or another & have hopelessly watched as our flower beds/gardens have become overrun with weeds. It's extremely overwhelming to look at a mass of weeds where there were once beautiful flowers or vegetable sprouts growing. So what happens? Nothing...nothing but more weed seeds germinating, growing tall & blooming, and then producing more weed seeds. Depending on the variety, some of those seeds may lay dormant for years waiting on ideal growing conditions. An established weed seed bank is created when weeds are allowed to go to seed (usually multiple times), causing a build up of seeds within the soil. Weed fabric does not necessarily prevent (although it does make them easier to pull) this because of the dust/soil that blows in and settles on top of the fabric. Also, some seeds do not require a lot of soil to germinate & grow. An established weed seed bank does not mean the beautiful flower beds or productive vegetable garden is no longer an option, but rather it's now going to require an increased amount of diligence & sweat labor to achieve that goal. Keep in mind that weed control is never a one time thing, especially concerning an established weed seed bank, but will require regular attention for the years to follow. Below is my recommendation:
